BEEHIVE’S SUMEYYE GUNEY RECEIVES 2018 UTAH ASSOCIATION OF PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS’ INNOVATION AWARD

The Utah Association of Public Charter Schools presented Beehive Science & Technology Academy’s Sumeyye Guney with its Innovation Award.  The presentation was made on June 13 during the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools 12th annual Circle of Excellence awards dinner at the Davis Conference Center.

According to the association, “The Charter School Innovation Award recognizes charter school employees that go above and beyond to innovate, problem solve through unique programs and policies.

Ms. Guney has served as Beehive’s IT director and computer science teacher for the past nine years.  Ms. Guney will be taking a break from teaching as she devotes all of her time to her newborn child.

During her time with Beehive, she taught several different computer science classes including, but not limited to, AP Computer Science, AP Computer Science Principles, Web Design and Development, and Application Development with various industry-known languages and technologies including Java, C# and Python.  In addition, she was involved with student after-school activities and clubs, and coached the Coding Club, Cyber Patriot and the FIRST LEGO League team.  She also played a key role in transforming Beehive into a technologically advanced Smart School (Beehive is one of two Platinum-Level STEM Schools in Utah—this is the highest designation possible awarded by the Utah State Board of Education and the STEM Action Center).  In addition, Ms. Guney helped Beehive achieve Apple Distinguished School status for 2017-2019 (Beehive was the first Utah school to be recognized as such, and is still the only Utah school to maintain this status).
