Nine students from Beehive Science and Technology Academy were among the winners at this year’s Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair held March 21 through 23, with the awards ceremony on March 24.
The fair is presented by The Center for Science and Mathematics Education located at the University of Utah. Students in grades 5 through 12 from public schools in the Salt Lake, Granite, Park City, Murray, Canyons and Tooele school districts, along with charter and private schools, were eligible to participate.
Beehive elementary division award winners were: Timothy Holt, fourth place in Biology and Biochemistry; and Nicholas Jacob, second place in Engineering: Mechanical.
Junior division award winners were: Alexandria McOmber, first place in Energy: Chemical and Physical; and K. Austin Grant and Kaden Gordon, second place in Engineering: Electrical and Computer Science.
Senior division award winners were: Nihal Kariparduc and Zachary Maynard, fourth place in Chemistry.
Special award winners were Nihal Kariparduc and Zachary Maynard, Stockholm International Water Institute Junior Water Prize – Regional Water Prize Award.
Alexandria McOmber won the Broadcom MASTERS Award. Her project will be going to a nationwide competition.
Broadcom MASTERS is presented by the Society for Science & the Public. According to its website, the organization “is a champion for science, dedicated to expanding scientific literacy, effective STEM education and scientific research. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization focused on promoting the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement: to inform, educate, and inspire.”
The website also says, “Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars), is the premier science and engineering competition for middle school students.”
