KSTU’s feature reporter and former sportscaster, Joe Wren, will be the commencement speaker for the Beehive Science & Technology Academy graduating class of 2018. Wren will address the 21 graduating seniors on May 31 at 7 p.m. at ceremonies to be held at the Salt Lake Community College Miller Campus located at 9750 S. 300 W., Building MFEC, room 101.
Wren worked for KSL Radio from 1998 to 2000 and has worked for KSTU since leaving KSL Radio. After having what he described as “weird, funky pains” for years, Wren suffered a major heart attack in September 2016 that nearly killed him. He actually died three times, and his arteries were 98 percent blocked. After making it through quadruple-bypass open-heart surgery, he made a complete recovery.
In a February 2018 interview with Salt Lake Tribune TV columnist, Scott Pierce, Wren said, “An EMT came up to me and said, ‘I’ve been doing this for 27 years. We’ve saved maybe two people who survived what happened to you,’” he said. “So all I can figure is there’s a grand purpose and I can help a lot of people. And, I’m going to.”
As a result, Wren often serves as a spokesman for the Salt Lake chapter of the American Heart Association. Plus, he’s the author of “Heavenly Being: A Witness to Glorious Life After Death.”
